Understanding Barrier Films: Protecting Your Product from Moisture, Oxygen, and Light

Every product that goes into a flexible pouch faces the same three enemies: moisture, oxygen, and light. The barrier film is what stands between your product and those threats, and choosing the right one is one of the most important decisions in packaging design.

What a Barrier Film Actually Does

n

A barrier film is a multi-layer structure engineered to slow the transfer of gases and vapors. Two numbers matter most: the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR). Lower values mean better protection and a longer shelf life for your product.

Common Barrier Materials

n

  • Aluminum foil laminates offer near-total barrier protection, ideal for coffee, pharmaceuticals, and moisture-sensitive powders.
  • n

  • Metallized films (VMPET) give a strong barrier at lower cost, suitable for snacks and dry goods.
  • n

  • Clear high-barrier films (EVOH, AlOx) let customers see the product while still blocking oxygen.

Matching the Film to the Product

n

A crunchy snack needs oxygen and moisture protection; a fresh-roasted coffee needs an oxygen barrier plus a degassing valve; a cosmetic cream may only need a light barrier. Over-specifying wastes money, while under-specifying shortens shelf life.
